I’m not alone…

I receive weekly emails from the Glass Hammer website, a career site for women, as the name would suggest.

Today, there is an interview of the Senior VP of Corporate Finance for Staples, Christine Komola. She said she learnt how to schedule and thinks keeping your calendar up-to-date will serve you very well.

I am so glad that such a successful woman like her ‘learnt’ the value of scheduling. It is very encouraging to me as scheduling is not my strong point. If she could work at it and get so far in her career, I am confident that I can too!

So, it is official, scheduling is an important skill to be successful, and you should start today!

Kanye West “Love Lockdown”

I’m not lovin you, the way I wanted to
What I had to do, had to run from you
I’m in love with you, but the vibe is wrong
And that haunted me, all the way home
So ya never know, never, never know
Never know enough, til it’s over love
Til we lose control, system overload
Screamin no, no, no, no, no
I’m not lovin you, way I wanted to
See I wanna move, but can’t escape from you
So I keep it low, keep a secret code
So everybody else don’t have to know

So keep ya love locked down, ya love locked down
So keep ya love locked down, ya love locked down
So keep ya love locked down, ya love locked down
You keep ya love locked down, you lose

I’m not lovin you, the way I wanted to
I can’t keep my cool, so I keep it true
I got somethin’ to lose, so I gotta move
I can’t keep myself, and still keep you too
So I keep in mind, when I’m on my own
Somewhere far from home, In the danger zone
How many times did it take fo’ I finally got through
you lose, you lose
I’m not lovin you, the way I wanted to
See I had to go, see I had to move
No more wastin’ time, we can’t wait for life
which is wastin’ time, where’s the finish line

So keep ya love locked down, ya love locked down
So keep ya love locked down, ya love locked down
So keep ya love locked down, ya love locked down
You keep ya love locked down, you lose

I’m not lovin you, the way I wanted to
I met no one new, I got no one new
No I said I’m through, but got love for you
But I’m not lovin you, the way I wanted to
Gotta keep it goin, keep the lovin gone
Keep it on a roll, only god knows
If I be with you, baby I’m confused
You choose, you choose
I’m not lovin you, the way I wanted to
Way I got to go, I dont need you
I been on this road, too many times before
I’m not lovin you, the way I wanted to

So keep ya love locked down, ya love locked down
Keepin ya love locked down, ya love locked down
Keepin ya love locked down, ya love locked down
Keepin ya love locked down, you lose
So keep ya love locked down, ya love locked down
Keepin ya love locked down, ya love locked down
If you keep ya love locked down, ya love locked down
Keepin ya love locked down, you lose

Work Life balance

According to wikipedia, the term “work life balance” was first heard in the 1970s in Britain. In the conventional terms, it refers to the balance between an individual’s work and private life. Most of us thought of it as the balance between the time we spent at work and on our private life. This includes myself.

But today, work life balance took on a whole new meaning for me. I was in a feedback session for my interpersonal skills with a co-workers. She shared with me that in a corporate environment, one has to stay alert and manage the impact of how one’s natural traits affect others. My first reaction to this statement was that a life like that is hypocrisy.

Then I thought about it and agreed with her, because the people in that environment would affect our performance gradings. And we all know that the higher we climb on the career ladder, the less it is about our technical competencies and more emphasis is placed on our people skills, such as influencing and leadership.

Therefore I came to the concolusion that to maintain work life balance, one has to know that s/he has to please everybody at work. But s/he doesn’t have to aim for being friends with every co-workers. This way, s/he can maintain the balance in life by being who they are and befriend those who they truly enjoy. Because after working hard to have good relationship with every colleagues on a day-to-day basis, we all need that break when we could simply say: I don’t like you, work mate! I will find my own mate that I like!

Nevertheless, I am not ruling out the very lucky situations where we make true friends that we work with, or where the workplace is relatively small and the family feeling is stronger. I merely think it is very unlikely when we work in a big organisation.

The whole thing reminded me of an acquaintance of mine who is a doctor. She once said she doesn’t try to be nice in her personal life because for the majority of her days, she has to be nice and sensitive to her patients and their families and friends. She simply doesn’t have the energy or inclination to do all she can to please everybody when she comes off her shifts.

Hmm… work life balance… now you might see it in a completely new light too!

I Will Always Love You ~ dedicated to B

If I should stay,
I would only be in your way.
So I’ll go, but I know
I’ll think of you every step of the way.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.
You, my darling you.

Bittersweet memories
that is all I’m taking with me.
So, goodbye. Please, don’t cry.
We both know I’m not what you need.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.

I hope life treats you kind
And I hope you have all you’ve dreamed of.
And I wish to you, joy and happiness.
But above all this, I wish you love.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I will always love you.

You, darling, I love you.
Ooh, I’ll always, I’ll always love you.

letting go

I sent my ex mother-in-law a Christmas card, putting my new married name on the back of the envelope.

She sends me a card every Christmas, and this year is no exception. However, she sent it under my maiden name.

The last time I saw her was about one and half year after my separation from my ex-husband. Our wedding photo was still on display in their lounge.

It might be pure coincidence, but I have a slight suspicion that I am dealing with the “letting go” issue here. It is sweet to know that she really loves me, nevertheless I am really a Mrs Something Else now. I sincerely hope it will catch on in the very near future.

Norman Buckley - Librarian

Norman Buckley (aged 44), librarian at the Manchester Central Library, was given a suspended jail sentence for his crime of stealing 400 rare books and selling them on ebay. Now who said librarians are boring?! Though Mr Buckley’s case is a scandal compared to the dancing librarian of the Philippines.

A Riverbank - L.S. Lowry

On Friday the 17th November 2006, a painting (Riverbank) by the painter for the working class, L.S Lowry, will be auctioned at Christie’s by the Bury Council in UK. In my opinion, this is very disrespectful towards the working class hero. The background information of this event is on a Flickr campaign site. If you would like to sign the petition against the sale, please visit the campaign site on Flickr.

The Christie’s listing for the painting is as followed:

TV with sub-titles ‘will help children to read’

According to the American top expert in reading aloud, Jim Trelease (aged 65), “parents of children over the age of eight should turn off the sound so their child can only understand its favourite programme by reading the text on screen”.

I must admit I improved my English beyond grammar and vocabulary in text books through watching Chinese soaps with English subtitles. Hence, at least I myself is a proof that the claim is valid.
